The Story Behind Nee Aatmatho

Some songs are written in a moment. Others take years before they become what they were always meant to be.

Nee Aatmatho has been that kind of journey.

I penned the first lines back in 2013. Then it sat in my archives for years, until 2018 when I revisited it and completed the writing. It was initially released in 2020 and by God’s grace found its place in worship gatherings and in people’s own faith journeys.

Yet I always felt there was more that God wanted to say through this song.

So, in 2022, I began reimagining Nee Aatmatho as a congregational worship song. Looking back after four years, I can see that every season of waiting was part of God’s process of shaping this song into what it is today.

Inspired by the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15, this song is for anyone who has drifted from God, carried the weight of shame, or searched for joy in all the wrong places. It is a reminder that no matter how far we have wandered, the Father’s love never stops pursuing us. When we turn back to Him, His arms are always open to welcome us home.

My prayer is that Nee Aatmatho becomes more than a song, that it becomes a prayer.

I love Psalm 91!

It has been a go to scripture whenever I am in need of God’s assurance and His promise of protection. I’ve always wanted to write a song based on it, but was not able to until the Pandemic impacted all of our lives. Amidst all the FEAR and ANXIETY of losing lives, jobs and adjusting to a new normal, the Holy Spirit started to nudge me to revisit the idea of penning a song to declare His promises from this Psalm.

The journey started at the end of April 2020 and along the way God brought some incredible people onboard. While in the process of making, we faced many challenges and roadblocks. Some of us had to fight our own personal battles, but God in His faithfulness was already using this song to strengthen us. It is my prayer that He would continue to use it to minister to many who are trying to find strength in the midst of life’s storms and battles.

Story Behind the Song

This song was originally written in 2012 and is based on John 14:6 which is one of the 7 “I AM” statements of Jesus recorded in John’s gospel. When someone says “I am”, it reveals their identity and in a similar fashion these 7 statements of Jesus reveal the identity of God. In the old testament, when Moses asked God about who He is, God does not fully reveal His identity and replies to Moses by saying “I AM WHO I AM”. In the new testament, Jesus fully reveals that hidden identity of the Most High. The main purpose of the song is to package together some of these identity revealing statements and take it to people who may still do not know about this amazing identity.

The journey of recording this song started in early February 2019 right around the period I moved to Washington DC from Los Angeles. It took a long 8 months for the song to shape up and there were lot of road blocks, delays and frustrating moments along the way, but God in His infinite mercy and in His time been only removing those road blocks and turning the delays into blessings. He has provided more than what I could ask and imagine for. I am ever so thankful to God first and to my family and friends who stood by me during this journey, shared my frustrations, tapped on my shoulders to encourage and more importantly prayed with me.
